A cadence sensor consists of three main parts: a spoke magnet, a cadence magnet and an electronics pod. The spoke magnet attaches to one of the spokes on your rear wheel, while the cadence magnet attaches to one of the crank arms on your pedals. The electronics pod mounts on your bike frame near the rear wheel and contains two sensors that detect the passing of the magnets. The pod then transmits the data wirelessly to your bike computer or smartphone via Bluetooth or ANT+.
There are two types of cadence sensors: single-sensor and dual-sensor. A single-sensor device only measures cadence, while a dual-sensor device also measures speed by calculating the distance travelled by the rear wheel. Some dual-sensor devices also measure power output by estimating how much force you apply to the pedals.
