We’ve seen it on boards outside cafes and it’s an oldie, but a goldie:
Yawning is a silent scream for coffee.
And now we’ve spent four days riding around Ballarat we can confirm, there’s no time or reason to crack a yawn here.
We felt it our civic duty to head to plenty, plenty of cafes around Ballarat so that we could pull together the ultimate list of best coffee finds.
So whose coffee do we rate?
Fika
36A Doveton Street, Ballarat
Swedish for ‘coffee break’ and English for top brew, Fika is definitely up there on the list of the best coffee in Ballarat for caffeine fiends like us. Matt and his team work with Sensory Lab coffee and serve it up in an oh-very-cool setting. A rider himself, Matt’s totally welcoming of cyclists. Not only is this place a great find for a good brew, it’s also where you go if you’re after really fresh, simple but innovative meals. Tickety, tick.

Europa Café
411 Sturt Street, Ballarat
Katherine and her team are a super efficient bunch. They make a flat-out, peak service time look pretty calm and smooth. They were definitely put to the test when our team of eight arrived – they already had a huge table of local riders waiting for their Coffex caffeine hit not to mention smaller tables all filled with early risers keen for a fix.

Vegas and Rose
96 Humffray St, North Ballarat
Vegas and Rose is a little taste of North Melbourne hip in downtown Ballarat. This place is warm and welcoming, and the Coffee Supreme blend is bang-on. It’s a good place to meet with any non-riding friends, as they’ll be able to do a little perusing in the gift area whilst you catch up on some quality carbo-loading.

Little Bird Café
205 Sturt Street, Ballarat
Little Bird’s the place to come not only to catch up on who’s doing what around town (hence the name), but also for a great All Press Coffee fix. When we visited, there was a gathering of local business people all patiently awaiting their take away. As Dan explains, this place is all about good quality without the fanfare – don’t come here to bow down at the altar of coffee religion, but come here for a great, no-nonsense caffeine fix.

Yellow Espresso
13 Sturt Street, Ballarat
Born and bred in Ballarat, but having moved to Melbourne as a young adult, Santina has now returned to her home town. Along with her fellow owners she’s opened a bright, white, modern fresh space that is churning out great quality Axil Coffee Roasters coffee.
