The only thing cyclists enjoy more than breakfast is a second breakfast, otherwise known as lunch.
There’s nothing more satisfying than completing a monster ride that takes you until midday to return from. It’s also a lot easier to justify ordering a coffee, and a main meal, and a little something extra. And perhaps another coffee!
Whether you are looking for the best post-long-ride destinations to replenish, or just fancy a great place to eat at, we have found the best places to have lunch in Ballarat (in no order of preference):
Fika
36A Doveton Street, Ballarat
Fika Coffee Brewers opened its doors in May 2015, and has quickly become known for its Scandinavian feel, specialty coffee and savoury bagels.
Fika is run by Ballarat local Matt Freeman, who is also pretty handy on the bike, although he is far too modest to admit it. Matt and his team are very welcoming, and you’ll often find yourself chatting with Matt about your bike of choice or favourite ride.
The savoury bagels are a delight, and there are plenty of sweet options including Kwak Scrolls and Doughboys Doughnuts.
What did we rate?
It is impossible to go past a cinnamon scroll. If you are after something more substantial, the smoked chicken bagel is a winner.

Vegas and Rose
96 Humffray St, North Ballarat
Vegas and Rose is a gorgeous little eatery that you will instantly fall in love with.
The unique name comes from the middle names of owner Panthea’s children, which is probably an indication of the level of care and passion that you will receive at Vegas and Rose.
As well as supplying some kick-butt coffee, Vegas and Rose specialises in homemade muffins and cakes, a selection toasted sandwiches and utilises the best seasonal produce.
They also do a mean milkshake and have plenty of options for the kids.
What did we rate?
The open sandwich featuring avocado smash with fetta and rocket is cleansing and satisfying at the same time, thus enabling us to devour a peanut butter and Nutella doughnut on the way out.

Saltbush Kitchen
102 Stawell St S, Ballarat VIC 3350
Saltbush Kitchen is located at the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka (M.A.D.E.) overlooking the Eureka Park Memorial gardens, and aims to bring native Australian flora to your plate.
The menu has lots of small tasty options that change from week to week, utilising whatever is in season.
Iced wattle seed, Kakadu Plum jam and Strawberry Gum soda are a few examples of the truly unique offerings at Saltbush Kitchen.
What did we rate?
The tuna melt with Lemon Myrtle followed by a Strawberry Gum muffin, all washed down with an Iced Chocolate and River mint drink.

Tuki Trout Farm
60 Stoney Rises Rd, Smeaton VIC 3364
‘From the pond to the pan’ and ‘from the paddock to the plate’ are the catch cries at the Tuki Trout Farm. Where else can you personally catch a fish and be eating it in a great little restaurant 15 minutes later?
After you catch the fish, it is cooked to your liking, brought to your table, and deboned in front of you. How’s that for pond to plate?!
As well as offering the most personal of fishing dishes, Tuki Trout Farm also offers the highest quality beef and lamb, with some classic desserts to finish.
What did we rate?
Smoked Trout pate as an entrée followed by a lightly baked fresh Rainbow Trout. Maybe even some Apple Pie for dessert.
